A Simple Task or a Significant Event?

Shot in northern California in 2020, a gajra is adjusted by a family member while guests arrive for the Nikah portion of a Muslim wedding ceremony. Worn as necklaces, hair accessories and bracelets by Southeast Asian women at weddings and other celebrations, gajras are flowers strung together with thread or wire.

The strings that hold together the flowers of a gajra also hold centuries of traditions and culture brought over during the diaspora and shared with new generations.
